We have seen the e-tron concept from Audi in different guises in different auto shows in the past few years. The 2010 Geneva Motor Show this week serves as venue to unveil the A1 e-tron which can go on high volume production. The Audi concept formally rolls out the e-tron range that may have quattro-like branding.
The A1 e-tron is a plug-in hybrid that will have a combustion engine with range extending features. The range extender is not the typical one you may have heard of. The A1 e-tron’s features a combo of electrical generator and a Wankel engine which works to top up the lithium ion battery pack.
The batteries power the 61 horsepower electric motor that peaks at 102 hp and a torque ranging from 102 to 177 pound feet. The motor uses one-speed transmission to transfer all the power to the front wheels.
The approach of Audi involves a range of technologies to hit electric mobility on the spot. Their goal is to make use of the energy with minimal losses. The carmaker also designed a temperature control system to keep the motor, the electronic components, and batteries in optimal condition.
On a single full charge, the Audi A1 e-tron can go for 31 miles before it makes use of the Wankel engine which can provide an extra 124 miles, which obviously doesn’t compete with the not-so-green Audi A1 Sportsback concept from last year. The drive technology is quite complex but Audi was able to keep the car light at 2,623 pounds. It is also able to hit 0 to 62 mph in a decent 10.2 seconds. The top speed is kept low at 81 mph to conserve battery life.
Audi will market the car not for its green value but will rely on the instantaneous torque of the vehicle to position itself in the top end of the segment.

Finally, a pretty green car by Audi. Excellent news!
